Crafty: DIY kate spade Fish Bowl

A couple weeks ago I was browsing the kate spade website and came across this adorable bowl.

I fell in love with it immediately.  I mean, is that not the cutest thing ever?!  The price tag, however, was not something to fall in love with at a steep $60.  For something that would probably just be holding some fake flowers I didn't think I needed to be spending that much money.  Luckily, I like to think I'm pretty crafty so I decided to make my own!

The kate spade bowl is earthenware.  I checked every craft store as well as Wal Mart and the entire internet (possibly exaggeration but not a huge one) and couldn't find one that looked anything like the one above, not even the same shape.  My boyfriend suggested just getting a plain glass bowl and painting it white.  I was opposed to this at first because the bowl pictured seems to have a more matte finish and I know the one I would make would end up being glossy.  Eventually I gave in after getting sick of not being able to find anything like this bowl.

All my supplies came from Michael's.  I think the bowl I got is 8" deep as opposed to the 6" in the kate spade bowl.  I used Americana Multi-Surface paint in Cotton Ball, which is a satin finish.  I used it inside the bowl.  Initially I wanted to just tilt the bowl and let the paint cover the inside, but the paint was too thick for that so I used a sponge brush to spread the paint.  This did end up causing the paint to be streaky.  I ended up coating it three times over the course of three days.  Is it perfect?  No.  You can still see streaks in certain lights (the flash in the pictures makes it look way more solid than it actually is) but oh well.  I wasn't looking for perfection.  I had thought about painting the outside or possibly using a texturizing paint on the outside but I didn't want to risk the smoothness of the fish.

To add the fish I used Craft Smart Paint Pens and just drew them on the glass.  I did some test drawing before I went ahead on the bowl but that doesn't always help.  Just go with it, though.  The kate spade one looks so DIY anyway that it doesn't matter.

Eventually, like I mentioned, I'm gonna throw some stones and fake some sort of flower or tree or something but for now I'm just going to enjoy the cute simplicity of it!

Oh yeah, and all this was under $20.  Score!
